Video of modern redux “Victory Over the Sun”

October 29th, 2004

This is so awesome: http://max.mmlc.northwestern.edu/~mdenner/Drama/plays/victory/avant.mov (no audio, Quicktime)

When I was in college, I became obsessed with Russian art history thanks to an incredible professor. One of the difficult things to imagine during that class was what Vladmir Malevich’s costume designs for Victory Over the Sun looked like. Can you imagine seeing this in the Russian theater in 1913? Amazing.

I’m so impressed that a group reproduced this, and even more glad that someone posted it to the net.

I am the creator/director of the production of VICTORY OVER THE SUN mentioned recently on this site.

I did this recreation on commission from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1981, and later toured the production to the Berlin Festival, the Demeervart in Amsterdam, and the Brooklyn Academy of Art. I did the film of the piece at the California Institute of the Arts, where I was Dean of the Theatre School.

The entire video is in the permanent collection at MOMA and in many other museums and universities. I sell it by direct order for $250. Reach me through http://www.robertbenedetti.com.

He said he enjoyed it very much.

It was a few years ago that I was first able to see it in an exhibition dedicated to Kazmir Malevich’s in Rome.

It’s an essential material for my final year project at the University, I am attempting to show the correlation between Malevich’s art and Kruchonych’s poetry, in this sense “Victory over the Sun” represents the culmination of their creative exchange.

I tryed contacting you but there is a felure system on your web page. i would like very much to purchase the video regestration of the opera. please contact me if you can thank you o.Zolin
