T610 MIDP

microdevnet is looking pretty snazzy as a comprehensive MIDP resource…

http://www.microjava.com/articles/techtalk/t610 Looks to specifically talk about adapting MIDlets to T610′s.

Unfortunately, as I look more and more at the T610, it seems like it’s not the platform to hit for really flexible, standard MIDP development. It looks like the support for MIDP 1.0 is there, but barely. It’s kind of funny that there’s a 1034-signature online petition for MIDP2.0 and raw sockets support, but also a little sad.

That being said, there’s something interesting about developing for a tricky platform that builds character. We’ll see if I get totally frustrated. If I start making commercial software i’ll probably get a couple different types of phones as testing platforms anyway.

My hello world application was crashing if I included a Ticker in it and ran it more than once. That is kind of a crappy implementation, unless I was doing something wrong by using the examples provided by Sun.

I guess i’ll reserve my judgement until I start messing with Mophun, but honestly, a hello world application should not be this hard.

Note: I’m running firmware version R1S001, hardware version R3B.

J2ME on Ericsson T610

Just bought a T610 today, running on T-Mobile.

Currently installing apache ant via fink. I’m going to mess with this and try to get a hello, world app on my phone tonight. Should be an interesting experience. :)

Lukypics!

Check out the resurrection of my Gallery-based photo album, lukypics! Since it hasn’t been up for a while, i’m calling it new!

Starting to learn RHEL3.0 on ServerMatrix

The past few days have been interesting, as i’ve been using RHEL 3.0, and so far i’m neutrally happy. A few complaints:

RHEL 3.0 comes with apache 2.0 by default, as the ‘httpd’ package. While mod_perl 2.0 is still in development, this leaves some users out in the cold (i.e. bricolage users). RHEL mysql-server is in the “Extras” channel of up2date. Kind of a strange thing to put there.

A couple great things:

The manual for RHEL reveals the command ‘redhat-switch-mail’, which is an easy way to switch to postfix after installing the necessary packages via up2date --nox postfix. The Client Authentication section of the Postgres 7.3 manual actually has a decent section now. I recall messing with <=7.2, and it was a nightmare that eventually ended in me giving up. This time, the examples are much more clear. ServerMatrix support has been outstanding during this process. I’ve had many trouble tickets filed for little tasks here and there (DNS, etc.), and they’ve all been hit very quickly. The staff seems to poke around in the Forums very frequently as well, and has a great sense of humor.

I didn’t know about the up2date –nox syntax before this point, but now that i’m using it, it doesn’t seem too bad. I’m more inclined to stay as close to an up2date-managed system as possible, and i’ll post on my blog about whether it works out for me as time goes on.

Migration to ServerMatrix

I finally made the move servermatrix. I moved away from ev1servers as a long-running philosophical difference about the purchase of SCO licenses. Here was the primary portion of the message I included in my cancellation request:

[begin snip] Because of philosophical differences stemming from the licenscing of SCO IP, I have been slowly looking for a new host for quite some time. It has not been a hurried search, so it has taken a while to find a time that I could change web hosts with. It is very important to me that free software as a concept be allowed to survive, as I have personally built my career, learning and developing within the free software world. I cannot in good conscience be an indirect supporter of SCO’s questionable business practices that threaten Linux and the open source movement through abuses of IP law. That being said, I was overall very satistifed with the service I received at ev1, and my leaving is in no way reflective of any sort of customer service problems. [end snip]
